Buffett will appear for the first time without his longtime business partner and friend Charlie Munger, who died in November. In 1978, Munger joined Berkshire Hathaway as vice-chairman and sat by Buffett’s side, quick with a quip or a sage piece of advice. Berkshire’s operating profits are expected to increase by 21% to $6,702 per Class A share, according to the FactSet estimates. Berkshire Hathaway reported a significant uptick in fourth-quarter operating earnings, which totaled $8.5 billion, up from $6.6 billion, or a 28% increase from a year ago. For the year, operating earnings rose to $37.3 billion, after setting a record of $30.8 billion in 2022.

NEW YORK, Nov 29 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Every great leader needs a Charlie Munger. The deputy to Berkshire Hathaway’s (BRKa.N) Warren Buffett died on Tuesday morning just a month shy of his 100th birthday. And Munger kept at it: at age 99, having served as Berkshire’s vice chairman since 1978, he was still giving interviews as recently as this month. Munger was capable when taking the opposite view from his boss, encouraging the kind of debate that fosters better decisions. Follow @thereallsl on XCONTEXT NEWSCharlie Munger, the longtime vice chairman and second-in-command to Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway, died at a California hospital, the company said on Nov. 28.

(AP) — Charlie Munger, who helped Warren Buffett build Berkshire Hathaway into an investment powerhouse, has died at a California hospital. Berkshire Hathaway said in a statement that Munger’s family told the company that he died Tuesday morning at the hospital just over a month before his 100th birthday. “Berkshire Hathaway could not have been built to its present status without Charlie’s inspiration, wisdom and participation,” Buffett said in a statement. Munger and Buffett began buying Berkshire Hathaway shares in 1962 for $7 and $8 per share, and they took control of the New England textile mill in 1965. He also gave a significant portion of his Berkshire stock to his eight children after his wife died in 2010.

New York CNN —Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway unloaded its entire $850 million worth of General Motors (GM) stock last quarter, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. Overall, Berkshire Hathaway was a net seller of stocks last quarter: The firm sold about $7 billion worth of stock and bought $1.7 billion. In the past year, the company has sold about $40 billion worth of stock. Earlier this month, Berkshire Hathaway reported that its bets abroad have also paid off. Shares of Berkshire Hathaway are up about 15.8% year to date.

Jimmy Buffett’s life evokes images of boozy chill-outs by the beach and a certain carefree calm, but in 1996 the singer’s seaplane came under a hail of gunfire in a dramatic encounter with the Jamaican authorities that inspired a song. Buffett’s song “Jamaica Mistaica” is a laid-back account of a dramatic near-death experience in which his plane, Hemisphere Dancer, was mistaken by the Jamaican authorities for a drug-smuggling aircraft. “We flew the plane in, got off, and as the plane took off to go get fuel, we were surrounded by a Jamaican S.W.A.T. team,” Buffett said in a 1996 Rolling Stone interview. “I thought it was a joke until I heard the gunfire.”

Warren Buffett isn’t worried about Fitch’s downgrade

New York CNN —Warren Buffett is shrugging off Fitch Ratings’ historic downgrade of US credit from the top AAA grade to AA+. The “Oracle of Omaha” told CNBC on Thursday that his company, Berkshire Hathaway, bought $10 billion worth of US Treasuries on Monday and did the same exactly a week prior. “The only question for next Monday is whether we will buy $10 billion in 3-month or 6-month [Treasury notes],” Buffett said. That suggests that much like others on Wall Street, Buffett believe Fitch’s downgrade won’t have much of a long-lasting, negative impact on the economy, the government’s ability to borrow, nor the safety of US Treasuries. Even after the most recent downgrade, Moody’s has kept its top rating of US credit.

NEW YORK, June 7 (Reuters Breakingviews) - “Do as I say, not as I do” sounds like the kind of pithy thing Warren Buffett might say to his adoring throngs. The conglomerate was an investor for a dozen years, until Buffett got spooked by Freddie Mac’s overly rosy earnings growth projections. The $1.3 billion stake it finished accumulating in 1994 was worth $25 billion last month. A $13 billion stake in IBM (IBM.N) came and went, as did $8 billion of JPMorgan (JPM.N) and almost $3 billion of biopharmaceutical company AbbVie (ABBV.N). Warren Buffett, Berkshire’s chairman and CEO, said that geopolitical tensions contributed to the decision to sell most of the $4.1 billion TSMC stake just a few months after buying it, the Nikkei reported on April 11.

NEW YORK, May 8 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Warren Buffett gives off a zen vibe about Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N) after his time is up. They’ll have over a decade to wind down the inheritance, in effect insulating Berkshire’s new leaders while they leave their own imprint. The succession planning has been possible because of Buffett’s iron grip, and not everyone is happy about it. One shareholder, Peter Flaherty, proposed separating the chairman and CEO roles at Berkshire. Berkshire security may be able to shut down such dissent at its own shareholder meeting, but it can’t stifle the doubts about life after Buffett.
New York CNN —Billionaire investor Warren Buffett isn’t worried about the state of the US banking industry — but he would like to see much tougher consequences for top leaders of the banks that fail. In the wake of the failure of Silicon Valley Bank, Buffett reflected on the public’s frustration after the 2008 financial crisis. The FDIC’s move was an extraordinary one, and Buffett said it gives him confidence about the state of the industry. It will be the banks, not US taxpayers, who will have to pay if the costs of bank failures rise, he added. “I do not think I could run the Fed as well as Jay Powell has done,” Buffett said.

He said he’s happiest when eating dessert and drinking Coke — and would give up a year of his life to keep doing so. “I always tell people: I found everything I like to eat by the time I was six,” Buffett said Wednesday in an interview with Becky Quick on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” in Tokyo. “I mean, why should I fool around with all these other foods?”
That was a nearly 8% drop from the company’s third quarter earnings of $7.8 billion. For the full year 2022, however, Berkshire Hathaway operating earnings reached what it called a “record” – $30.8 billion in 2022, topping the $27.5 billion in the prior year. The company also bought back shares in 2021, repurchasing $6.9 billion of the company’s stock during that year’s fourth quarter, which helped boost the company’s earnings per share. In his State of the Union address February 7, Biden called for quadrupling the tax on stock buybacks. Buffett believes stock buybacks benefit existing shareholders, and is well aware of the disapproval.
But the Oracle of Omaha has missed out on this year’s stock market rally. Buffett, in fact, has promoted that idea to investors many times, arguing that most individual stock pickers will not be able to beat the market. And to his credit, that usually pays dividends: Berkshire stock was up 3% last year in a down market. “High rates of inflation create a tax on capital that makes much corporate investment unwise,” Buffett said in his 1980 shareholder letter to Berkshire investors. Investors will get several more clues about consumer spending this week when several top retailers report earnings.
